This iconic symbol of freedom and democracy was a gift from the people of France to the United States. Designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and built by Gustave Eiffel, the statue was dedicated on October 28, 1886. Also, it represents Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom. She holds a torch in her right hand. Also, the tablet inscribed with the date of the American Declaration of Independence in her left hand.
It is made of copper sheets, which have turned green over time due to oxidation. The statue’s crown is adorned with seven ray. Furthermore, each ray represents the seven continents. Supposedly, the face is modeled after Bartholdi’s mother. Moreover, inside the statue, there is a spiral staircase that leads to the crown. It is here visitors have a picturesque view of NYC skyline.
