The city is known as Illinois’ “Gem City,” located on the western border of the state. The border joins the two states of Iowa & Missouri. During the 19th Century, Quincy was a thriving transportation center as riverboats and rail service linked the city to many destinations west and along the river. It was once the second-largest city, surpassing Peoria in 1870. Current day it’s an important river city, and is an integral part of the Great River Road, America’s historic north-south transcontinental byway since 1938.
