Mount Rushmore, located just north of what is now Custer State Park in the Black Hills National Forest, wasย named for the New York lawyer Charles E.ย Rushmore, who traveled to the Black Hills in 1885 to inspect mining claims in the region.
Mount Rushmore has a secret room that no one can enter. Located behind the facade of Abraham Lincoln, sculptor Gutzon Borglum designed the chamber. It holds information for visitors about the monument and information of America’s history from 1776 to 1906.
Sculpture
It is a tribute to four presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln and their invaluable contributions to the United States. The site houses the Sculptorโs Studio, the Lincoln Borglum Museum, the Avenue of Flags, hiking trails, Junior Ranger Programs for kids, interpretive ranger-led activities and the Evening Sculpture Lighting Ceremony.
Designed by sculptor Gutzon Borglum, the monument was created to celebrate the nation’s history and the ideals of democracy. The project began in 1927 and took 14 years to complete. Moreover, the faces of the presidents’ measure about 60 feet in height. Additionally, the site attracts millions of visitors each year.
George Washington symbolizes the birth of the nation. Moreover, he was the first president and a founding father. Thomas Jefferson is the principal author of the Declaration of Independence. He represents the expansion of the United States through the Louisiana Purchase. Theodore Roosevelt is included for his role in the progressive era and his contributions to the conservation of natural resources, while Abraham Lincoln embodies the preservation of the Union during the Civil War.
