Originally established in the early 18th century as Mission San Antonio de Padua, it served as a religious outpost for Spanish settlers. Over the years, the structure evolved into a military fortress, most famously during the 1836 siege when a small group of Texan defenders, including notable figures such as James Bowie and Davy Crockett, held out against a much larger Mexican army.
This confrontation has become a symbol of resistance and sacrifice in the fight for Texan independence.
