The scenic view is a mountain railway connecting Norway’s two largest cities; Oslo and Bergen. A trip on the Bergen Line offers one of the most spectacular scenic experiences in Europe. It crosses the Hardangervidda National Park, onto the Hardangervidda plateau, Europe’s largest high mountain plateau.

The Bergen Railway was built in 1909 and runs over the highlands between Oslo and Bergen. These are the two largest cities in Norway. The Bergen Line is Northern Europe’s highest railway line, with Finse being the highest train station at 1,222 metres above sea level. The mountain areas are normally covered in snow between October/November and April. During these months the locomotives often carry a snow plow at the front. The entire journey on the line takes about 7 hours to fully complete.

This scenic journey traverses the stunning landscapes of the Norwegian countryside, offering travelers breathtaking views of mountains, fjords, and lush valleys. As one of the highest railway lines in Northern Europe, the Bergen Line reaches an elevation of over 1,200 meters at its highest point.

The route passes through charming villages and towns, each with its own distinct character and heritage. Notable stops along the way include the historic town of Finse, known for its outdoor activities and proximity to the Hardangervidda National Park, as well as Myrdal, which serves as a gateway to the famous Flåm Railway, a popular excursion that descends into the stunning Aurlandsfjord.
