Bluefield is known as “Nature’s Air-Conditioned City” due to its unusually cool summer climate. First settled in 1777, Bluefield took its name from the bluish chicory plants in the region. With a strong Black community, Bluefield was the site of the 1895 founding of the Bluefield Colored Institute. Back then it was a historically black college. It developed as today’s Bluefield State University. It is known as “The Whitest Historically Black College in America”. The city is traditionally thought to be named after the chicory flowers in the area. They give the fields a purplish blue hue during the summer.
